Burial at Sea
The Galley
crew quarters
The hammocks and the
bridge
A massive rust-streaked metal wall
with the Russian letters "Potemkin"
painted across it dominates the stage.
A thin rusty bridge cuts across the wall,
allowing the commanding officers a
clear view of their crew below. A
tangle of crude hammocks flies in for
the crew quarters, and suspended table
tops define the galley. When the crew
lands in Odessa, the ship wall and
bridge have flown out, leaving only a
vast expanse of sky which dramatically
silhouettes the massacre.
